In the original story, the Tin-man started out human but he started working long hours in order to afford to give his true love the life he felt she deserved. But he cut off a limb and had it replaced so he could keep working. He kept cutting off body parts until he was completely replaced with metal. But since they did not give him a heart, he actually lost the reason for his efforts.
So the comic is fitting since the tin man became the tin man because he had to work long hours to make the money he wanted.
