That sounds like my Mom & me when I was younger. My room was up in the attic & she’ll call up. Most of the time I could hear her, but she could never hear me, so I had to put aside whatever I was doing & go down at least one flight if not both.
Our living room is two-stories and there’s a balcony on the second floor. My wife’s WFH office is across the hall from the balcony, so we can hear each other just fine.
My loving late wife used to do that to me. She would leave the Living room where we both were AND then start asking questions. I miss that even though it was annoying when she did it.
My house. My wife is in the kitchen and I’m in the bathroom and I can hear her talking at me, but can’t hear what she says and don’t want to yell back to her.
Do like my wife and I, we text each other from one end of the house to the other. If she wants me to do something I don’t like, I tell her we must have a bad connection because she’s not coming through clearly.
Early in our marriage I would stop what I was doing and go to where my wife was and eagerly see what she wanted. Now its, "YOU KNOW I CAN’T HEAR YOU IN HERE! She’s still the love of my life, but that’s where we are now.

After a number of years of marriage, most of your conversations consist of hollering, “WHAT?!!!” to each other from different rooms.

Speak louder so I can hear you, or softer so I lose interest.

In our household is works differently.
My wife calls up to me, in a normal voice, and I can hear her with no problem.
I respond, and she can’t hear me even if I shout. I have to get up and go to the stairway for her to be able to hear me.
And believe me I don’t have the kind of voice that people can’t hear!

Tagging my house completely, but I do believe my wife has a small amount of hearing loss…but no one dares to say it to her again.
