We have come a long way from Shakespeare’s “What’s in a name? That which we call a rose/ By any other name would smell as sweet,” [Romeo and Juliet, Act II, Scene II]. Juliet is telling Romeo that a name is just a name, a convention with no meaning behind it, that names themselves do not hold worth nor meaning; they simply act as labels to distinguish one thing from another. We now use names/labels to establish the quality of an object or person. ’It’s a [insert name brand], it must be good!’
At least sparkling wine is still sparkling wine. Can’t say the same about honey, olive oil, or organic cotton – and probably a lot of other things.
