I never had a/c when I lived in NY. Now I’m in Florida and it’s a necessity. EVEN if you love the heat (I do), but for reasons of mold and mildew, you MUST have a/c. Heat, on the other hand, you can live without. We use it about once a year. For an hour to remove the chill from the house.
20 to 25 years ago, it seemed like there were a few days of very hot days (90 degrees +) and a few more over 80. Now these type of days have become much more prevalent and AC is needed, at least at night to comfortably sleep. Central unit are expensive to purchase, maintain, and run. Individual window units can be used when one is in a room, which would cut down on operating costs.
My maternal grandparents still had an outhouse (1950s), because my grandfather smoked stale cigars he got cheap and grandma refused to let him smoke them in the house.
The mistake they’re making is not talking to a professional about their choices. They should learn more about mistakes others have made, and what’s new in the business.

Try selling the house without it*

AC is not extravagant. It’s necessary when it’s sweltering hot.

My BFF and I were discussing which we’d rather do without – a/c or indoor plumbing. We opted for a/c.

Mine certainly didn’t-especially after we pushed the outhouse over one too many times. She wasn’t supposed to be in it.

2 choices. Be comfortable or be miserable.

in the 1950s, I can remember getting water from a well from my GGmothers’s house in Oklahoma. Their house looked like it was from a Steinbeck novel.

Where do they live? AC isn’t a luxury in most of the country.

My great grandmother was like that. Used an Outhouse and got her water from a well in the front yard.

Knew the Betty character had attitude problems but never knew the authors made her a luddite.
