I don’t mean to boast, but I happen to know Jerry Lewis played a goofball in the movies with his partner Dean Martin, and of course Clark Kent was the secret identity of Superman. But I can’t remember Lewis and Clark teaming up, but that would have been a funny movie I would have watched.
I think the teacher is misreading something. Shouldn’t she be asking about Lois and Clark and why they are famous? That question I’m sure Calvin could answer.
Although it does not define us, our collective past shapes who we are today. I think this is why a few of us are so adamant about keeping some of our past hidden from students. When we examine what makes us uncomfortable, it motivates us to accept it, make the necessary repairs, and move on as a better society. But even as an individual, it’s hard work accepting where I went wrong but it’s the only way for me to legitimately get to making repairs.
I hardly see that as “useless” information. How can any (mostly) younger person go to the movies or open a streaming channel without being at lest somewhat educated on such things.
You don’t need to know this, and you don’t need to know that and you don’t need to know the other thing and before you know it, you don’t know ANYTHING.
When I was that age, I could have cared less about Lewis and Clark. But, I could name every Star Trek episode ever done, identify which season it was by the incidental music and the backlighting and could quote the captain’s log entries verbatim.
I could tell you all kinds of factoids about video games, pro wrestling, Transformers, or comic books. Not so much about the other less interesting stuff.
It’s a wonder that I wasn’t officially diagnosed with autism/ADHD until recently (I’m 44).
so whose history would you follow? the woke crowd, the European scholars, or maybe some extreme american comentator. What I learned from my history classes is he who wins writes the history book. most of it is bs.
There seems to be a widespread misunderstanding about lower education. The point is that you are “learning how to learn”. Skiving off, fantasizing, cheating or guessing don’t work that well on the real, unfamiliar problems you will encounter in your life.
What you are supposed to be learning is how to organize information, extract relevant “chunks” from it, and express it in your own words. In your future, nobody will care about whether you still remember intrepid explorers; they care about whether you are educable.
I confess that I was a bit of a cut-up in class but I knew where to draw the line between fun and learning. I did learn how to learn, still learning today.
She wants to see Calvin after class so that she can find out about the secret superhero origin of each member of captain napalm’s thermo-nuclear league of liberty.
A later strip has Wormwood reminding herself that she has five years till retirement when Calvin is causing trouble. Calvin makes it feel like an eternity.
To be honest, Lewis and Clark is kind of advanced for a first grade curriculum. I don’t believe elementary schools teach about them until second or even third grade.

Lewis and Clark were explorers. Calvin likes exploring. So he might find it interesting (if not useful) to learn a bit about them.
