When I clean out a closet ect.i don’t care if a object sparks joy it goes by has it seen the outside of the closet in the last year if no then out it goes very few exceptions
@dlkrueger …and her name in Japanese is pronounced ma-ree-eh. It’s just a coincidence that the romanization of her name looks like the English name Marie.
Do I keep, donate, or throw away? Make the decision by asking yourself these three questions: 1) Is it a heirloom? 2) Is it a thing of beauty? and 3) Is it practical and/or useful?
That person dared say that you should throw away BOOKS!!!!! Who throws away books? I’ll fight for the right to have a house cluttered with books till the end of my life!
Back in the normal times before the past 2 years we go to a large bookstore on Friday nights after dinner for the evening. Husband would wander around looking. For the several decades we did this I read books on organizing (more for keeping me going at trying than for actual advice.)
When I read Ms. Kondo’s book – and still – I cannot understand her idea of getting rid of everything which does not “spark joy”. Get rid of all cleaning supplies? Get rid of the “unpresentable” clothing that one needs for “that time of the month”? Get rid of the medications one needs to take? Get rid of the laundry basket? Get rid of the huge heavy winter jacket that one would freeze without in sub freezing weather – or the boots?
I sent an email to her to ask if I was misunderstanding. I figured if the book had been translated into English – someone must be translating – the answer received back made no sense.
Her instructions on closets – putting dressers and such in them – made no sense until I saw in a Japanese movie that apparently closets in Japan are the same as they were here in 1700s – a separate room (and back then not used for storage of clothing).
Of the dozens of organizing books I have read over the decades – hers was the one that made the least sense to me.
Marie kondo, or whatever.A person who became filthy rich by sucking in people with “tips” that either people should know and/or are probably hand me downs from other filthy rich tip hunters. As P T Barnum said, I think it was him anyway, there’s a sucker born every minute
