âIâd like to See both of us fall deeply in love. Iâd like to See you in the raw under the stars above.â âBoogie on Reggae Womanâ Stevie Wonder.
I had a blind friend in college who looked and acted so normally that once when we were ordering bagels, the guy behind the counter got impatient because she didnât see him. I nudged her, so she ordered, then when she went around the corner, he saw her guide dog. His face went into pure embarassed shock! It was pretty funny. I told my friend and she laughed. Her mother had taught her from birth how to sit and behave like the sighted because she didnt want her to look like Stevie Wonder or Ray Charles ((thats not a slam on black entertainers-they were just the most visible examples her mother had to refer to). It obviously worked!

âSee you againâ was not vision-related in this case, Joe.

Blindness is not an absolute. There are many levels of impaired vision.

Blind folks often use âsightedâ terms like âSee ya later.â Makes much more sense than âHear ya later!â

So if two blind friends are dating, are they still âseeingâ each other?

I used to be able to write in Braille, level one. I still get a kick out of checking signs that have Braille on them â ATMs, elevators, etc.
