Some of those streaming series have year long gaps between “seasons”, and sometimes a season has only 8 episodes. My new strategy is to suspend my subscription until the end of the year and binge watch everything new in December.
What really frosts me is streaming 3-4 seasons of a particular show and then the next season has moved to a different streaming channel and you have to try to find out where it is and hope its a channel you can get without paying another damn fee!
We haven’t watched “live TV” for over 30 years now. First the VCR then the cable-box recorder, now supplemented by a streaming service. No, NOT Netflix or Prime.
I would say telephones have changed at least as much, as have personal computers and radio. Automobiles have changed a lot but not as much as the communication systems have. We ain’t seen nothin’ yet.
“5 minutes of commercials every half-hour”…ROFL. You have a rosy memory. There was a commercial break every 10 minutes and a longer one on the half-hour.
That happened to me with the final episode of “The Fugitive” with David Jansen. Everyone (it seemed) in the USA was tuned into this last episode in which the “one-armed man” was revealed, except me. Seems I was at summer camp that day and I missed it. To this day I’ve never seen it.
I find that “Young Sheldon” is a Cash Cow for commercials..2 minutes the first break, six and a half minutes the middle break and two more minutes for the last break (more or less) then rolling credits leaves only about 18-19 minutes of real programming.. >sigh< We’re doomed.
The two most important advances in television since those bad old days are: 1) With VCRs, DVRs, etc. I haven’t had to watch a commercial since 1987 and 2) football games and presidential addresses no longer get to screw up my TV watching schedule.
I remeber the days of watching shows and if you missed one you always knew you could catch it during summer reruns but now the put stupid reality or game shows on during summer, no more summer reruns. And remember the excitment of the major cliffhanger at the end of the season and having to wait all summer until new season came out to get the end, the one I remember being most anxious all summer was – Who Shot JR? That was a long summer waiting to find out. Ah the memories of good tv.
Just 5 minutes of commercials?? Where did he watch television? As I recall, you had 3 minutes of commercials, after the first credits, 5 minutes of commercials, in the middle, and then another 5 minutes, after the final credits. So for a half hour show, you had 10 or more minutes of commercials.

Also a big change to television. Never know when the next episode is going to play or be pre-empted by some sporting event, or political bruhaha

Yet people still say there is nothing good on television
Don’t those people realize that they are now old, and entertainment is no longer targeted at their tastes?

I read an article that made me realize that I go to the “metaverse” every time I watch tv. So, I don’t think I’m a big metaverse fan all those ads!

And then Cable came along, and we got 150 channels of garbage we don’t watch, and we only had to pay over $100 a month for it!

And it was free. When pay TV started it was supposed to be commercial free…that didn’t last long.

How true! We were in the middle (season 6) of watching a popular series on Prime TV when all of a sudden, it’s only available if you pay for it. :(
