If this was the 1960s, no seatbelt would be more realistic. Isn’t the 80’s when the automatic seatbelts were installed in the doors, along with the bells and whistles to remind you? My mom insisted we always wear them as soon as we could (1970). She’d pull over to the side of the road if we took them off!
I know the requirement that ALL passengers must be belted is fairly recent development. But, why would it be THAT weird for someone to belt themselves in , while in the back seat? Unusual, yes. But, weird?
I have worn a seatbelt every time I get into a car since I can remember. Most of Dan Thompson’s recollections of the 80s HAVE made sense so far. Maybe in the community that he lived in back then had a seatbelt use problem.
I don’t remember when cars in my country started having back seat belts. But I think in the 80s it was already there. My late dad didn’t have enough to buy a car but many relatives and friends would readily loan him one because he helped many people during their difficulties. I remotely remember seeing back seat belts then.

I’m sure there were a lot of people that wore seat belts back in the 80s.

Oh, come on. I wore a seatbelt since driver’s ed in the late 70’s. Those graphic reels were made for a reason.

If you wanted to drive on base, you had no choice in the matter. It turned out to be a good way to establish a habit.

Come on. I learned to drive in the 70s and was required to buckle up. Have worn a seatbelt ever since. I think by the 80s many if not most people did.

I started driving in 1981 and have since always worn my seatbelt, mind you people already believed that I had escaped from an insane asylum.

Looks like Rip’s monitoring his smartphone. Wonder where he’s picking up a signal from. :)

I wore seatbelts all through the ‘80s. For the last few years of the decade I was an EMT, dealing with those that didn’t.
