And when that arm gets tired, the first arm is somewhat rested. In addition, the ball can be kicked. How do I know? 4 rescue dogs, one who doesn’t care to fetch, and two fanatics.
I used to have a cat who loved to play fetch. When he got tired, he would drop the toy mouse into his water bowl to let me know that the game was over.
I have a Pit mix that never tires in playing tug-a-war with her favorite bleach bottle toy. I keep trying to tell her I’m too old for this, but she keeps insisting that if I’m vertical, I’m ready to play.
I had a German shepherd that loved to play fetch with sticks. When she got tired, she would go get the stick then lie down until she was rested, then bring it back. Not the fetch stamina of a lab, but she was still a lot of fun.
My Pit-Lab never fetched. His previous owners didn’t teach him; so whenever I threw his ball he would go to it but, never bring it back. (Can’t teach an old dog tricks. If I had had more time maybe he’d have learned.) When I would go to the grocery store and would be unloading my car; he would bring out one of his toys and play in the yard. When I was finished and tell him to come in and bring his toy, he wouldn’t. I’d have to go retrieve it myself. Said all that but, I really miss that old boy.

my mother’s dog fetches the ball 5 or 6 times, then jumps up beside me on the couch, and throws the ball or me to fetch

This explains why Nate is such a great swordsman . . . not.

Our lab mix is about 15 and still wants to fetch all day. We have to stop her or she’d give herself a stroke.
