It doesn’t just assault the nose. It assaults the entire GI system.

Apparently Granny’s factory job doesn’t pay a living wage if (ugh!) cabbage is all she can afford.

Some dishes are best served cold. Cabbage can be included in that category. Don’t forget to add a salad dressing…….

“It doesn’t need to rhyme, Grandma?”

    “No, Agnes.”

“Okay: Thanks, God, for the stinky cabbage.”

When I was a kid, we were driving through either N. or S. Carolina, and passed through a massive cabbage field – I mean, you couldn’t see the end on either side of the road, and it went on for miles.

It had flooded out, and all the cabbage was rotting in the field. As an olfactory adventure, it ranked (see what I did there?) right up there with a slaughterhouse or a paper mill.

That smelled better than cooked cabbage………………………..

I love cabbage! Cabbage is delicious, be it raw in a salad, or in coleslaw, or made into beautiful sauerkraut. Fried cabbage with bacon and egg noodles or potato dumplings is divine. My favorite dish has massive amounts of sauerkraut with sausage, bacon, pork, onions, garlic, lots of good Hungarian paprika, and sour cream — yum — I have some leftover in the freezer right now for dinner tomorrow. I am planning on making a sweet cabbage strudel next week.

My (late) Ukrainian gram used to cook cabbage rolls for the community social group often. Her cooking was awesome but you could smell the cabbage halfway own the hall of her subsidized apartment.

It’s a shame that our country has so many “working poor,” such as Agnes’ Grandma.
