In the comics, he never has to grow up.

Boy grows up, but love will stay!!

Live it up, boys! There’s plenty of time to grow up.

I still have the urge to do that today! Ha

Sadly, the dog will probably die first.

At least until the comic space continue fails to advance. Red will get summer vacation, then rejoin school at the same grade with narry a mention.
