We can date the phrase “Dutch treat” back to at least 1887, a time when the act of escorting a lady and making her pay was considered ungentlemanly. English speakers applied the word “Dutch” to this practice to indicate their disapproval. The hostility that caused the English to coin the term “Dutch treat” died away long ago.

My daughter’s future father-in-law insisted on taking the wedding party to a nice steakhouse even tho we knew he couldn’t afford it. When the bill came (several hundred dollars because his family drank a lot) he announced that he didn’t have any money and left. His family scurried out as quickly as possible while ours banded together to pay the bill. He did have one nephew who stayed long enough to finish his beer and then try to steal the tip.
