In French, ants are “les Fourmis.” Because they have formic acid in them to work on wood, etc. One night in the dark, I reached out to my desk to get a cough drop. Dang! it tasted awful! Turning on the light revealed that the ants had found the open box of cough drops.

So I totally relate to his expression…

I took a big swig of coke that had been infested with black ants. Those ants had a fiery taste to them. Of course, I spat them out immediately.

I pulled an open bag of potato chips out of my cabinet and started eating them while watching TV. They tasted different but good. Then I looked, crawling with ants, LOL!

My sister found some Chocolate covered ants at a specialty store and fed them to me when I was little. I don’t remember the event, but I don’t care about ants as much as some people do. (https://www.food.com/recipe/chocolate-covered-ants-16438)

Gtrandma, with bad eyes, didn’t see the tiny beetles in the breadcrumb box. Her boiled onions looked like they had pepper on them. A few folks ate them before discovering they were beetles!

In a junior high school science class, we were offered the opportunity to try eating red ants. I thought they tasted rather like lemonade (thanks to the formic acid}.

Our daughter taught English in Ethiopia a few years ago. She told us she and her coworkers would throw away the raisins the first year. The second year they’d pick the ants out. The third year they ate the raisins, ants, and all!

I was eating a bowl of raisin bran in the dark, noticed that it seemed to be crumblier than usual. Turned on the light and discovered that I had eaten most of a bowl of ant-infested cereal. It didn’t taste any different than usual, but I couldn’t eat any more.
