I loved Hogan’s Heroes!

Given Spike’s circumstances, shouldn’t he be watching I Love Lucy instead? It would seem more appropriate.

What an iconic line from the era when television shows were classics! And how charming that the comic artist Charles Schulz’s favorite TV character was Sergeant Schulz of Hogan’s Heroes.

Do you guys know that sergeant Schultz is Charles Schulz’s last name but with a ‘T’ in it?

That Television must a set of ‘rabbit ears’. Since cable was just beginning to appear in the U.S.. And I don’t see any cable being dragged from the TV room.

An interesting side note: Werner Klemperer (Colonel Klink) was once quoted as saying: “I had one qualification when I took the job: if they ever wrote a segment whereby Colonel Klink would come out the hero, I would leave the show.”

Hogan’s Heroes was also broadcast in the Netherlands, but was never a success. 25 years after the German occupation, Dutch viewers weren’t ready for ‘funny’ Germans. Especially a scene where the Americans are digging a hole while the Germans are watching didn’t go very well with the viewers. And the fact that most Germans were played by Jewish-German refugees was lost on the Dutch viewers.

Spike and I have something in common. No, not our thin bodies, don’t i wish. But, our love of Hogan’s Heroes.

I wonder what Spike would’ve been watching these days.

Hogannnnnnnnnn!

Early episodes Schulz might as well have been a traitor. Hogan’s gang seemed to hide things a little more from Schulz as the series went on than they did early on. Not that it mattered either way, Schulz was just trying to get through the war as unnoticed as possible. And if that meant letting what amounted to a group of spies and sabotuers conduct buisness while pretending to be ordinary POW, then so be it.

In all of the six seasons of the show, I don’t recall that Col. Hogan ever addressed him directly as Sergeant Schultz.

Oh, hey, I actually know that reference! A friend at college introduced me to that show. I didn’t watch a ton, but it was goofy and fun =)
