i sort them by size: Slivers are so small as to be nearly invisible (but hurt like mad!), splinters are big and don’t require the use of a magnifying glass or fine tip tweezers.

Had one go all the way through my hand once. Wasn’t a good experience, and the least bad thing I called it was ’’splinter’’.
