A diabetic’s foot injuries can be fatal… so not always a laughing matter. I got multiple stories about that from doctors when I had sepsis, possibly from a very small piece of something (2mm in size) that I stepped on and could never find. Xrays helped a surgeon find it.
If you’re an older diabetic plugger with very high blood sugar, your feet might just be killing you too. (Hint: See a vein and artery specialist for ultrasounds of your lower legs. Compression socks will often help such that no surgery is required!)
Antarctic explorer Douglas Mawson traipsed back toward base in late 1912 / early ‘13 after the other two members of his party died. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Far_Eastern_Party) At one stop, he took off his boots and socks to check on why his feet hurt so much, and found the soles (of his feet, not the boots or socks) had completely separated. One account described this as, “His feet are not just killing him, they are literally falling apart.” (He’d also accidentally poisoned himself eating something he thought would be extra nutritious.) Spoiler: He didn’t die ’til 45 years later.

It was like his feet just walked out into traffic on their own will and he just got taken along for the ride.

Reminds me of an engraving on a tombstone I saw in Key West: “I told you I was sick”.
