“The Great Pumpkin saith unto him, Linus, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.” (John 20:29 (almost))
Kids believe in Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and the Tooth Fairy because they come into their houses to bring toys, candy, and money. The big three don’t make you dress up and go door-to-door yourself for goodies. You just wake up and there it is. If the Great Pumpkin wants to build his brand, he needs to put in the work.
Wonder if the phrase “fund raisings” is common in some region of the US. The N-gram viewer shows that “fund raisers” has always been vastly more common over time including the 1970s and looking at some of the hits for fund raisings shows most usage more along the line of discussing the broad activity of raising money (fund raising either for charities or as part of investment banking) and then speaking about this across multiple organizations in the plural than describing an individual event as a “fund raising”. However, as recently as 2018 Virginia Brown’s The Blue Rain has “… I and my students helped the home for the aged, and the orphanages through the Fund Raisings that we did. In order to do the Fund Raisings, I directed Stage Plays.” using it in the sense that Schultz is here, so it could be more common regionally.
Anyone from somewhere that this idiom is used instead of “fund raiser”?
Have Peppermint Patty running track to raise money for the movement. X number of laps for Y amount of money. Course she’ll have to go door to door and get some pledges to donate. And she might not want to explain why they’d be donate the money, otherwise it’ll be you guys would have to give the Z amount just to stop laughing in your face.
Fund raisings are boring; they should have fun raisins instead. Sitting in a grape vineyard on April 30, the National Raisin Day, beats freezing in a pumpkin patch on Halloween.
