I admire your restraint Zoe. Another sister might have slapped Hammie up side the head.

Panel two is bad enough, knowing Hammie’s lack of hygiene but Panel three went too far. Hammie’s lucky he did phart or Zoe would have physically unloaded on him and i would have had to back her up on it. Wonder if Zoe contemplated biting Hammie’s butt?

Zoe’s discovered the best way to counter that sort of thing, ignore it.

Hammie must be thinking: " Did I go too far…or not far enough? Gee, I think I may need to recalibrate my tactics."

Reminds me a lot of my little brother when we were growing up. He’d irritate the hound outta me with stuff just like Hammie is doing. Then when I’d remove myself from the situation by going to read or whatever, he would complain to our mother I was ignoring him and I’d get into trouble for it. I would tell her what was going on and she didn’t believe me, though my dad did and would.

One day on a Saturday, I was in the back yard working on my bicycle (after we moved to town, I needed it to deliver papers) and he would come up, push it over, take the tools, what have you. I’d have to stop and chase him down to get the tools back. I was squatted down working on tightening the chain when he came up behind me and threw a piece of cactus into my upper back. I stood up and faced him as he was laughing about it. Mistake, because I punched him once, square in the face, knocking him to the ground and giving him a bloody nose and fat lip.

I heard my mother start yelling at me. She and my dad were watching from the kitchen window. She saw the cactus sticking out of my back and even though she saw him do it, thought I had over-reacted. That occasioned a big argument between mother and dad, but ultimately, I was vindicated.

Mother wondered until the day she died why my brother and I weren’t closer…but he never threw cactus on me again…

No reaction is often the best reaction.
