Your job is to be parents, not cool, not friends, and you won’t be loved by your kids 100% of the time. Teach them right from wrong, choices have consequences, be ethical, and be there when they need you.
My granddaughters have learned that Papa tells some wild stories but the 4 y.o. is always glad to see me. The 12 y.o. is too cool/indifferent/pre-teen/whatever to show emotion. I can’t wait for her to get through this phase over the next 10 years or so.
Coolness requires some mystery. You’re never going to think someone you see all day everyday is cool.
Besides, even if you were Cary Grant, the only way your kids would think you’re cool is if you didn’t make them go to school, bought them motorcycles and let them eat ice cream for dinner.
I am so grateful for my parents who showed me so much love — in an old-fashioned way. They weren’t, and didn’t try to be, “cool,” but they did have a lot of fun with us.

The only way you’re gonna be a cool parent is if you crawl into the refrigerator…

My daughters’ friends find me cool in my extreme un-cool-ness. They appreciate that I can talk & joke with them, but keep my Mom-ness.

All kids call their parents something insulting until they become adults.

Well, Wanda, Zoe calls you Frankenstein’s Momster, insulting Hammie at the same time.
