We always put the old trees in a wild spot in the yard to make a winter shelter for the critters. They would gradually work their way back into the ecosystem.
Back in the 70’s, we’d take a bunch of trees that were left at the curb for the town to pick up, line them up across the street, then throw snowballs at the cars that stopped.

If they’re lucky, they’ll be recycled into mulch for new Christmas trees!

In real life, there’s at least one charity that accepts donations of old Christmas trees and turns them into canes for people with mobility issues.
