Noah Webster also simplified the spelling of many words. He did a lot of LABOUR on his dictionary, especially eliminating the unnecessary “u” in several similar words, still spelled the original way throughout the British Commonwealth. He was never HONOURED for his efforts. Nor did he spend time in GAOL for his work.
I’m with Baldo on this one. We should all keep in mind that dictionaries describe how language has been uzed in the past. Their value is in helping us decipher what other people might have intended their words to mean, which is very important. But, when we start letting dictionaries prescribe how we uze language, that shows a fundamental misunderstanding of their purpose and it stifles creative expression.
English spelling and phonics are so inconsistent, it’s a wonder anyone can spell well, and I blame it on our alphabet. “C” is such a deceptive letter- sometimes sound like an “S”, sometimes like a “K”. And don’t get me started on diphthongs!
Wonder if he was inspired by the book about the kid who coined the word, “prindl.”
Baldo should appreciate the importance of good spelling, since he lives in a universe that can only communicate with ours through speech balloons. If his words aren’t spelled correctly, much of his audience will likely give up on the strip.
Finally, don’t be a jerk, Baldo! Use correct spelling!
When I was a child I spelled so poorly that I would write “seplling” in the headings of the spelling exams. In sixth grade my spelling teacher actually taught me spelling by having me stay after school and worked with me on the problem.
I may not always spell words correctly when I write, but I can generally recognize words which are misspelled and correct them – at first with a dictionary, now with spell check. (Though I often find that words I use are not included in spell check and not because I am misspelling them.)

They’ve already convinced people (even Sergio!) that spelling is a subcategory of grammar, but I’m not sure what they think anyone has gained by it.
