Wouldn’t do here. In the City, such trees are protected. I’ll likely be selling my acreage in the next couple of years (yes, for a boatload), and I feel easier knowing my three ancient oaks will go on.
A coworker bought property with a very old maple. He told his new neighbor that he was cutting the maple down because it would be in the way of his new house. The neighbor asked that he change his house plans (he had over 10 acres) and leave the tree. Failing to agree on this, the neighbor contacted the Audubon Society, who looked at the tree and determined that it was one of the oldest maples in Connecticut. When my coworker refused to listen they told him that they were going to get a court order to stop him. As soon as they left the jerk grabbed his chainsaw and cut it down. I have lots of stories about this idiot.
Some people just don’t understand that we are just caretakers of the land and property we posses. The time we are “owners” is just a short fleeting instance in a long timeline.
We have a beautiful old oak tree that reminds me of this one. It has been there for centuries. Luckily, it’s on church property that I doubt will ever be developed. I love seeing it. It’s right in a city, too, but that church must have bought up that land tract a very long time ago as they have a lot of it, and I hope they never sell off the section with that tree. I have been looking at it when I am near it for decades.
I am a potter. And like most potters I know, we respect and cherish the land (where do you think our clay comes from?) Wondering where this cartoon idea came from?
