See, there’s where I have problems being a true old codger. I did walk to school, less than a mile, flat ground, and if it snowed 1/4 inch…. the schools and most of the city shut down. We had to raid our neighbors’ yards to get enough snow for a snow man and they looked fuzzy with dead grass.
I actually have a friend who walked uphill to school both ways. There was a hill between him and his school. And he walked over it as the other way would have been 2 km longer. And he walked all year long.
My father was involved in many activities in the little town I was born in. After helping to setup the town library, they gave him their old (1940s) Britannica Encyclopedia.
nope – but I do have a large bar of soap for a certain gum-flapping smart mouth that needs to be cleaned out for respect. Oh and that’s too cruel? – well I have another alternative you may enjoy even better ya little twit
When I went back to visit my Aunt, I drove past the school and the place were we lived at the time. I couldn’t believe how far I had to walk to school everyday. But it was only uphill one way, and rarely snowed. It made up for it with rain though, it was in Washington.

Loved the library and the used bookstore downtown that had all the National Geographics magazines for a quarter a piece.

I went to a college library for a term paper. It took the entire first visit just to figure out their card catalogue.

And you had to learn to use the card catalog.

In Berkeley from Grizzly Peak, it was downhill to Hillside Elementary. But returning home was all uphill.

My dad bought a set of encyclopedias for us. It was a huge purchase, at the time, but we lived out in the country and no where near a library.

Loved going to the library to do research. And using the………..card catalog! You’d be looking for one thing and find a bunch of other cool things too.
