What really happened here? Did that apple have the same charge as Newton? Were there magnetic fields involved? Did the apple not believe in Newton’s Laws of Motion?
Isaac Newton’s story was that he saw an apple falling from a tree and he started thinking about gravity and – according to one John Conduitt – how far does it reach, and, according to William Stukeley, why down, particularly.
That an apple fell on his head is only a joke, a long lived one.
A suggestion has existed that Newton was making a different joke about the so-called absolute truth of the bible and the Garden of Eden story by considering an apple, but if that is the evidence, it isn’t borne out. The reported speech only talks about the physics of gravity. I don’t see a reason to doubt Newton’s apple experience, either. For that matter, the “King James” bible doesn’t mention apples in that story. The word “fruit” is used. But traditionally, it’s an apple.
