It’s sad to watch a dog apologize. They are just pitiful. I had a dog who would manage to get a loaf of bread, chew up what she wanted while I was at work, and then hide it, usually behind my bedroom door. One time I yelled at her about that, and she walked away, very sorry, and returned with a chewed up pack of matches! She was apologizing about something I didn’t even know she had – since I didn’t keep matches in my house or let my dog run loose. I found her behavior very human that day, and of course I praised her for telling on herself. She was an amazing dog. Then there was the time my child got some matches and sort of lit her bed on fire, but that’s another story.
Buckles ……Why do you put yourself through all the agony and effort to fake sick, then torture yourself with guilt …….. when you could have just gotten the paper and be guilt free ………………………. of course you did get a bunch of treats and toys …………….. :)
Considering Buckles has a few humanlike characteristics (talks, can walk both upright or on four legs, etc) he kind of represents a “child” figure (for his childless owners). Anyway setting it aside, reminds me of when I was 16 and I decided once to skip school. I ended up too confessing to my parents and got punished. Though I actually could have gotten away with it since back in the 1990s nobody was too keen on teens not showing up if it was once or a few times. So no one would have noticed…. but guilt got me.

And cue Paul taking away the treats once he hears Buckles confess, thinking that Buckles doesn’t deserve those treats for lying to him.
