Madame Marie always asked for the fee upfront whenever she told people’s fortunes, because the only future she could foretell was that life never turned out quite how you expected, but gold was always accepted wherever you went.
The young women of the Swedish village turned to Great Aunt Maja regarding their Romantic Problems. As a respected (and sometimes feared) “white witch,” depending on the circumstances she prescribed a love potion that was a hot infusion of finely-milled sphagnum moss and comfrey. A secret incantation of prayers to St. Bridget activated its magical properties.
Served with wild honey and lingonberries, it was said to to open the heart of even the most stubborn man, clothing his being with desperate unconditional love. It was considered a positive transformational experience, not a hex or curse. Many a happy marital union resulted.
It seldom failed, but if it did Maja resorted to the traditional Swedish method of writing the man’s name on a slip of paper and burying it deep in snow on a rocky mountain slope. Thus his heart was frozen evermore in that vicinity. Any semblance of love he would ever experience, inferior in most respects, required his move far away.
