My late dad was raised on a farm in the 1940’s. He would always appreciate the smell of a well-manured field if we drove past one – and would tell us to take note (and also mock us if we complained about the smell).
Years ago, I bought a rental house with a completely dead yard. I tried to restore it, but nothing worked as the soil was lifeless. So, I burned it off with grass killer, tilled it over and went and bought a truckload of composted manure. Spread it all out and did a heavy over-seed. My neighbors did not appreciate the aroma of my yard but 2 months later they were all begging me to tell them where I had bought the manure because I had the most luxurious lawn they had ever seen. Nature might be stinky at times, but she knows what she is doing.
I’m bad about reading cartoons quickly and not stopping to observe the nuances and details in the art work (as is often the case here). Today, I assumed it was a platter full of grilled burgers until the last panel!

Only a gardener could appreciate that smell.

If it reeks like that, it isn’t composted manure and will burn the plants.

He is not reacting to the smell. He is reacting to finding out what it is.
