Back in the day. They hadn’t invented a water bowl to do “your stuff” in, (thus keeping the smell under water). And a “ S ” shaped exit pipe, (think water-trap), to keep bad smells from the sewers from reentering the “Throne Room”.
The garderobe usually was just a straight drop to a pit. Sometimes used in castle design as a defensive device. As who would want to fight in and through the castle’s sewage pit to enter a castle?
Perfume was used heavily back in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance because local plumbing and personal hygiene was so bad. That the place literately stank. Flowers and sweet-rushes were also used.
I agree, but of course it definitely depends on which way you’re facing the thowe. Praying to the porcelain gods and making rainbow sacrifices don’t really give you many great ideas.
The French royalty had no privacy. In the grand coucher, they would start get undressed for bed in front of their most important courtiers. Then, in the petit coucher, they would finish the job in front of their really and truly most important courtiers. The morning getting dressed ceremonies were reversed and called the levers.
