My landline still requires a 1 for most of the people I call and it wonât let me add it to numbers on the caller ID, so I have to dial the whole thing.
Most places you still have to dial the â1â, which is now called the Country Code, outside of your area. To call other countries, you begin the call with their Country Code. To make things even more confusing, the United States and Canada share the same Country Code.
I have never completely gotten over the annoyance of having to dial the area code on my cellphone for a call in the same area code as my phone number.
Area codes were first assigned based on number of phones in the area (to make it faster to dial the number). NYC-212, DC-202, LA-213. while low populated western states would have 8â-, 900 #.
We still need to do that from our work (US Government) phones when the call is outside our area code. 9+1+area code+number. Within our area code, itâs just 9+area code+number.
Then everybody in the 707 area code, which is a rather large chunk of northwestern California, is a Plugger. I for one have to dial 1 before making a local call on a land line. They did this because it was the only way to get 988 to work as the Suicide Prevention Lifeline emergency number.

Sometimes I dial the 1, sometimes I donât. If itâs really a âsmart-phoneâ itâll figure it out.

My phone only allows ten digits, so prefacing with â1â is right out.

I just tried dialing a number yesterday and it was refused. Told me I had to dial 1 before it. It was for a town about 100 miles away.

Those flip phones are getting harder to find. Verizon apparently does not carry them any more.
