When I was there in ‘67-’68, I don’t recall any big Vietnamese acts being played on AFVN radio.

With his connections, I bet Phred could get Jimmy Thudpucker.

If they wanted glam metal, that would have been Bức Tường (though the band didn’t hit truly big until the following year.) Indeed, it looks like V-pop didn’t take off until the early 21st Century—most of the Vietnamese pop and rock people outside the country would have been listening to would have been from the diaspora of refugees. (I have some of that in my CD collection.) Part of why the music scene didn’t travel well is that post-unification, the government imposed “red music” rules, promoting patriotism and Communism.

Thailand’s music scene was pretty big around the time of this comic. The most successful albums in that period often sold over a million copies.

Was Tiny Tim still alive when this was first published?
