The shark could have just dove with Louie in its mouth.

Since some sharks are endangered now, this is a good way of freeing Louie without seriously harming the shark.

I get how the comic has moved from the pirates to the animals but if you go back a few months there was a strip with two sharks talking about how they would love to eat Louis but never would since they would have to deal with Nate. The same Nate who under the cover if darkness cuts the shark nets from their platforms.
