There is research indicating that the act of manually planning a route on a map (vs. just letting the GPS tells you where to go) exercises parts of the brain that make and access memories. So planning a route may help stave off dementia. Something for us old guys to keep in mind.
I haven’t looked in a long time, but I used to get county maps at gas stations if I was travelling and then make strip maps in a notebook about how to get to the destination.I don’t know if they carry maps any more, but I think AAA locations still have them.

I have no problem using modern tools to make retro things work well. I don’t even see the irony: Tools are tools, and I use the ones I find useful.

I drove a delivery truck in the 1980s and a Thomas Guide was a Godsend, nowadays I have both Google Maps and Waze.
