Why is he using a fountain pen? Why not a pencil or ballpoint pen?

I have now been keyboarding for a long time, so while filling out a form today with a pen, I can see that my handwriting has become shaky and almost unintelligible.

I got into an argument with a friend about whether pens were better than pencils…

…I’ll admit, they had a point, but I still think the argument will be erased in time.

What’s the difference between a smudge and a smear? In that panel, they looked pretty similar to me.
