Upstairs neighbor and I would pass each other for 2 years with a simple “hey” and no more. She got a Yorkie, and a friendship developed — especially between me and the Yorkie.
I am afraid of dogs unless they are completely docile and part of the furniture.. I have always been afraid of them, but there is no rhyme or reason for it (though I lie and tell people I was bitten by a dog as a child because I am embarrassed by this fact). We always had cats. I like pets that ignore me.
I used to be afraid of a Golden Retriever that lived in my neighborhood. Thing is, she was an absolute sweetheart and I knew that, but when you’re a little kid and you see a giant dog come running at you, logic goes out the window.
Most people in the world seem to have lost so much of their basic humanity that they don’t seem to be human any more. At least not humane. So, I’m kind of with you, Steph.
HOWEVER! … Stephan (actual) and his wife, Staci, owned and deeply loved their dog, Edee. He said Edee was his only dog (cocker spaniel, maybe?) … When she passed away, Pastis drew a touching and beautiful Sunday strip (not sure as to exact date) as a tribute to how great Edee was and how much they loved her. … So very sweet!! … :)
Kinda’ cringey, my good buddy! That said, I ADORE BOTH dogs AND people!!! Maybe it helps being in a nice Buffalonian suburb one block from a HUGE park?
When my late Uncle was about 4 years old, he announce one day,“Dogs are better than people.” A story that lives on in family lore to this day. If you think about it, in many ways it’s true.
For once, Cartoon-Boy is right on. People? Blech! Nice doggies? What can be better?
If I had the room and youthfulness to to take proper care of it, I’d for sure have me a Rough Collie, my favorite breed since I had some (good) experience with a neighbor’s when I was a little kid; probably a Blue Merle for me….

Take a walk in a cemetery. Makes me appreciated they people that went before me and the ones I have now. Helps if the cemetery has lots of trees.

I’m a dog lover but it certainly depends on the dog. Like people, they have individual personalities. (Sorry, couldn’t think of anything funny today)
