Here’s a very old joke. Is it relevant? I respect your opinions:
Two drivers approach a bridge from opposite directions. The bridge is too narrow for both of their cars to cross at the same time. One of them must give way.
One driver angrily shouts from his car, “I never back up for idiots!”
The other driver, shifting his car into reverse, shouts back, “I always do!”
Everyone starts out with a basic amount of respect from me based solely on the fact that they are fellow human beings. They get in on the ground floor. Whether they push the up or down button from there is up to them.
My respect for other people is not based on their wealth or power. It is based on how well they treat other people, especially people who can do nothing for them.
This pretty much eliminates that class of people known as politicians.
Why? Your actions need not be dependent on another’s actions. This reminds me of some students during my teaching career. Usually kids up to mischief in the halls. Often, it was a sign that they needed validation as they did not respect themselves very much.
I need to have that as a placard when I go to the local Tar… store. There are some really disrespectful customers there, so bad, I will only go there in an emergency
I respect people who do jobs I am not willing to do for ANY salary: customer care agent (people are upset with you before you even answer the phone), grade school teachers (I like kids, but I don’t think I would do well locked in a room with dozens of them), police officer (I didn’t mind getting shot at as a military member) , nurse (I have the “smarts” to pass the tests, but not the right attitude) to name a few.
Also, since I am “dumb from the neck down” anyone who is skilled with his or her hands has my respect.

You command respect, not demand it. That said, start with a default level of respect and manners.

It helps to treat people with respect even though they may not deserve it.

The amount of respect I give others has nothing to do with the amount of respect I should get from them. I might be an a-hole, they might not.

I would normally agree with that, but I’ve shopped for a used car and gotten way more “respect” than I felt comfortable with.
