Karen was getting tired of John repeating the old saw about ‘being joined by a pretzel is a sign of true love’

/// It’s a strange old Dutch game played by two.

Take a pretzel— each hooks fingers through.

Plucked up hot off the dish

    each pulls, making a wish.

Biggest piece means your wish will come true.

Hey, Priceless fans! Are you enjoying Throwback Thursday, but wish it occurred 7 days a week…possibly twice each day? Well, that’s a very specific wish, but it’s potentially just come true, with the debut of the That Is Priceless YouTube channel.

To check it out, just go here: https://www.youtube.Com/@thatispriceless5242/shorts

The channel is a work in progress, but basically what I’m doing is turning individual Masterpieces from the archives into 10-second “reveal” videos, complete with AI-generated voices reading the old and new titles.

The plan is to initially drop two (or maybe three) of them each day (including the weekends for now), so it’s a great way to get your Priceless fix while you’re waiting on a new one.

And of course you can comment on those Masterpieces all over again, presumably with a bunch of newbies also getting in on the action.

Here’s where I’d like to ask you for a small favor: as you may know, to be successful on YouTube, it’s all about piling up Subscribers. And there’s a bit of a herd mentality: the more Subscribers a channel already has, the more likely new visitors are to subscribe themselves. Being brand-new, I could really use a boost to get the ol’ Subscriber ball rolling, so if you do have a moment to check out the channel and you’re interested in seeing more, please click the “Subscribe” button either on the main page or at the bottom of a video. It’s THAT easy!

Full disclosure: since the all-time favorite Masterpieces are most likely to attract the new folks, if you’re a hardcore fan, there’ll probably be several paintings familiar to you here in the beginning. But rest assured, if it looks like the channel’s got legs, I’ll be diving into the deeper cuts soon enough.

Finally, as I mentioned, the whole thing is a big experiment, so if you’ve got any suggestions or requests, please don’t hesitate to drop them here or in one of the comments sections on the channel.

    Thanks! Hope you enjoy it.

    Steve

“Whoa, now, kids! Be aware that in our religion, the ‘entwining of the pretzel’ is as good as exchanging wedding rings. And to ‘break a pretzel’ means consummation. You don’t whisk me to batter you up the side of the head!”

The Pretzel’s not just a salty, crunchy snack —

Its religious symbolism goes way back!

The ingredients of flour and water meant

They could be consumed during the season of Lent.

And three holes (this might seem odd)

Represented the triune nature of God.

    .

So as you munch on pretzels while watching TV,

Consider the history of things that presently be.

Our ancestors saw meanings in things so small

We don’t think them very significant at all.

Pretzels, as if with arms folded thus …

Might be in judgment observing us.

He actually misjudged the distance to hooking her bodice top and wound up pulling on her pretzel instead.

    Pulling the Pretzel

    Paste (including the quote marks)

    "Category:Paintings of pretzels" Wikimedia

(syntax supported by the Google, Bing, Yahoo, DuckDuckGo, Ecosia, and Yandex search engines) in the browser address bar (or search for it using one of those search engines) and choose the first Category: found and once there find the text string Bijlert, and click its link for info and links that point to more info (perhaps best viewed using the Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox browser, which can automatically translate most webpages if necessary) about this painting (100x the size you thought if you viewed the WC webpage before I corrected what its Summary shows for Dimensions).

Again, a larger strip image is shown by (Ctrl- or right-) clicking the image in Mr. Melcher’s MASTERPIECE #3211 (October 27, 2023) blog entry, accessible by the Check out the blog! box after the last comment, and using the dropdown menu. I have added a comment there (awaiting Mr. Melcher’s approval) pointing to info about this artist I used to point to here. Only work by him used here so far.

/// Real Bavarian pretzels are made

with a dark brown, mahogany shade.

The dough’s dipped, when it’s dry

    into strong caustic lye,

    making texture and flavor top-grade.

/// Now the bakers had long ago learnt

that the lye could cause skin to get burnt.

    You must use just enough

    of that dangerous stuff.

Munch with alcohol, find yourself turnt.

Keep away from the pretzel rod, or you could end up in a wedding knot!

    A critical moment

    https://www.Loc.gov/resource/ppmsca.43656/

has info about this 1906 chromolithograph of a circa 1906 drawing with no attribution. Due to its Library of Congress watermark at the top left corner, I can’t post it to WC (watermarked images aren’t allowed).

Again, a slightly larger strip image is shown by (Ctrl- or right-) clicking the image in Mr. Melcher’s MASTERPIECE #3216 (November 6, 2023) blog entry, accessible by the Check out the blog! box after the last comment, and using the dropdown menu (even larger, if you trim what’s after .jpg from the URL). It is one of 50 works, so far, that have been used here with initially no or current unknown attribution, the September 25, 2023, strip being the prior.
