The line must be taut or it won’t work. (Just in case any kids reading this strip are going to try the same thing).

When I was a child, my best friend lived next door, and my room faced her house. My room was on the second floor and I rigged a can-and-string “phone” out my window.

Everyone who wrote comments about the need for the string to be tight inadvertently revealed themselves to be quite advanced in age. I doubt any kids have done this in the past 40-50 years. And yes, I made one of those devices a LONG time ago.

I think those only worked of the string was very taut.

The string for those “phones” only conducts sound when taut.
