Apparently “they” have done some polling and discovered that families mostly don’t get into fights about politics. Not even “intense discussions”… partly because we’re actually easier going than the meme has it; partly because families have plenty to talk about that’s not politics; partly because they’ve already HAD all the political talk they can stand and everybody knows it’s not going to change any minds.
There should more grenade’s in the basket. Not only politics, but religion, the Middle East, Ukraine war, China, U.S. policies, Inflation, Iran, North Korea, so forth and so on. Like the billy Joel song, " I didn’t start the fire. " Wonder what’s for Christmas?
I meet Americans here and other forums who cannot understand that Thanksgiving is only a US celebration.
Though to be honest, we Brits should be celebrating all those troublesome Puritans who ran away to the USA. Most seem to have got over it.
I also see that Faux Not-News has expanded their ‘They want to ban Christmas’ hoax to ‘They want to ban Thanksgiving’ because some First Nations peoples have pointed out it might be nice to think about the First Nations people you massacred/betrayed/etc while you tuck into your turkey.
And on a culinary aside, start a campaign to get rid of the turkey, the big birds are tasteless and dry. But do try a honey roast, Roman recipe, much better, though the bird comes out black…
My family and I have this unspoken rule where we don’t bring up topics like politics at Thanksgiving. If you do, you gotta leave. Doesn’t matter if you live there: If you start causing issues, get out until the gathering is over. No time for it.
Sometimes it works out pretty well. My MAGAt brother in law got so desperate to get me to talk politics that he actually admitted that Obama was the best president that we’ve had since Carter. I’m still not sure if he was kidding, because I’m still in shock, but he seemed sincere.
We just did not invite those people when we lived in the USA. Up here people are polite and don’t bring politics up at Thanksgiving. Either Thanksgiving. Saving the turkey for Xmas, gonna have a honey glazed ham and all those fixings this afternoon. With time left over for the late football game. GO NINERS!!!!
So happy we aren’t having to deal with this any more. It was stressful enough having to make the feast and prepare for overnight guests when working the 3 days beforehand and then having to deal with a right wing, victim cop brother-in-law where one had to walk on eggshells. Sorry my husband’s sister died, but the one benefit was never having to see that fellow again.

Like ‘change’; sometimes unnecessary, most times unwanted, and always inevitable.

I promised I’d keep my mouth shut today. Talking politics today is a good way to ruin a feast.
