Hold on! Who admits that Susie is a girl? Just Calvin? Just Hobbes? Or Susie herself? (We normally wouldn’t trust what a girl says, but no one would admit that if it wasn’t true.)

But keep her out of the club, just to be on the safe side. Don’t risk girl germs. (I think Americans call them “cooties”.)

As I have explained many times, I used to believe that the living Hobbes was part of Calvin’s imagination and started to question this when I read my first Calvin and Hobbes collection “Something Under The Bed Is Drooling” and saw that two strips showed Hobbes alive and speaking directly to us when he was alone. My suspicions were confirmed nearly four years later – in April 1992 – when I read Bill Watterson’s comment “I suspect that he’s more real than any kid would make up.” One of my fellow fans uses strips like this one to contradict Watterson’s statement. He points out that Calvin enjoys arguing and fighting with Hobbes therefore he would imagine someone like Hobbes. Watterson has also explained that the GROSS Club is based on a real two-boy club which he shared with the boy next door who was his best friend. Therefore, the arguments between Calvin and Hobbes are based on real childhood friendship rather than a boy and his imaginary friend and support Watterson’s claim that Hobbes is a real friend rather than an imaginary one.

Anybody see Mike Johnson there…?

I don’t think Susie would be interested – she likes social clubs just fine, but what kind of club is it without regular tea parties??

Another of the all time great Sunday strips from Watterson. All based on the fact that for Calvin as dictator for life of his own club, it’s guilty and never able to prove innocence.

With Friends like that Calvin didn’t need enemies.

The strip that disproves Watterson’s claim that no kid would ever imagine a friend who disagrees with him. Calvin obviously enjoyed the fight, and obviously would do something he enjoys.

Like most self-styled dictators, Calvin keeps giving himself more and more exalted and grandiose titles.

Oh how I miss Mr. Watterson’s genius.

A few more years and Calvin won’t think girls are slimy. Hopefully.

At first glance in the third panel it looks kind of like Calvin is the one shouting “HERESY?!”

When I was in grade school some of the neighborhood kids and I formed the Boy Army. We ran into the rank ceiling problem and worked around it by adding levels. E.g. a second level private outranked a first level 5 star general.
