Questions about the copyright on Micky Mouse encouraged some underground cartoonists to publish Air Pirates in 1971 with MM. The lawyers of Disney were swift and brutal. But no copyright is forever… (Although a special copyright granted Mary Baker Eddy’s Science and Health came close – at one point the Christian Scientists had more political clout than they do now.
I have heard that other countries have longer copy right protection laws, so things that are distributed overseas could incur liability in that country.
Be very careful, the copyright has only expired on that one primitive version of Mickey Mouse. Copy any newer Mickey and Disney will descend on you with three generations of lawyers.
Right wing extremists are already planning an OG Mickey feature with the Disney characters as nazis. (Because of the DEI position in Disney today) Cannot make this kind of trash up
Ahem … there is a difference between copyright on an item falling into public domain and a trademark. Afaik, Disney continues to registrations of all their more famous cartoon characters as trademarks. More at uspto.Gov.

Pretty sure Cheburashka and Gena are public domain, if you’re looking for some options.

The copyright on “Steamboat Willie” has expired, but the trademark on Mickey Mouse is still very much so active. There is a difference.
