Why I hate family vacations pt. 1

We always took books to read on the road. We weren’t in a car as much as in another world.

“Are we there yet, I have to “go”, Hammier poking me", etc.!

Wait til the ransom bill comes in.

Is Daryl hoping Christy Brinkley will be at the pool?

It’s February. In what universe will school be over soon?!?

Both of my parents were in school work and thus had their summers off as well as us kids. Our summer vacation road trips was the highlight of my youth. In a ten year period we visited, or at least at the bare minimum drove through 49 states. We never made it to Hawaii. Strangely enough, my most memorable states were the Dakotas.

Darryl has a short memory from the last family vacation road trip. Until Zoe and Hammie can mature enough to not be picking at each other all the time and Zoe tattling on Hammie, road trips will continue to be tenuous.

I miss road trips

I still contend that even with having a pool at the hotel and seeing many family members who wanted to spend time with our kid, our most recent trip was more of a vacation for her and a project for us.

So long as the kids are relatively quiet and not antagonizing each other.

My dad’s idea of a week’s vacation* was a three day drive to get there, three days there, and three days driving back. I hated it.

*Weekends on both ends, of course.

Already forgotten the snow trip?

I’m all for planning vacations well in advance, but it’s early February. The school year won’t be over that soon.

No brakes?

Most memorable road: Cooke City Highway, across the Beartooth Mountains from Montana to the NE gate of Yellowstone. Even more memorable in the days before the road had intact guardrails.

No distracting the driver!

Where is the “school year” over in February?

You mean Hammie hasn’t been barred by all Hotels?

Dad does that mean we stay in hotels, no cooking, and or cleaning. Except for laundry.

We never took vacations as kids. My dad’s idea of using vacation time was for him to get caught up on yard work and fishing. He was truly a homebody and hated to travel.

Interestingly, “hostage situation” and “family vacation” have the same number of syllables.
