Tru, dat! As a kid I felt like it was a punishment when I was made a sandwich with the heels. Now I just add extra peanut butter and jelly with a regular slice of bread in the middle. Life is good!
When I was very little I thought even inanimate objects had feelings. I felt sorry for the heel ends as often so seemingly thin and disdained, and asked for them specially on sandwiches. That feeling of sympathy still somewhat lingers.
I like to put one in a bowl with a little milk and butter, drop an egg or two on it, and then nuke it. A little garlic and pepper, maybe some sprinkle cheese on top, makes a nice breakfast.
I made bread for Holiday dinners and always brought both loaves over to Mom/Dad’s. My brothers asked how I made bread with no heels. My Dad, deadpan, “She ate them”.
George Carlin’s classic routine “The Good Bread” came to mind. Also, I began eating the heels of the bread when I left home and had to buy bread for myself.

I’ve never understood why people cut the crusts off bread, the crusts are the best parts.

When my mother would bake bread, I couldn’t wait to slice off the heel (still hot), slather it with butter and “nom nom nom.” Yummie.

I never had a problem eating them, but these days it’s a hand held treat for my chickens.

Putting the crust side of the heel inside hides it. :-}

My wife refuses to eat the heels and I have no problems with them. Also, they hold up better than a regular slice of toasted bread when eating SOS.

keeping the heels on to the end keeps the bread fresh
cor_en_fa about 1 year ago
I never minded the heels. Throw them in the toaster, slather them with butter, and you have a plugger’s English muffin.

I used to cut up the heels and give them to the birds, but now the heels are my favorite, especially for sandwiches.

The crusts are the best part on a homemade loaf hot from the oven; otherwise, not so much.

Love bread, heels or middles. Can tell just by looking at me :D

My mom said that she and her siblings fought over the heels when the loaf was just out of the oven. Commercially baked bead wasn’t the same.

I was the only one in the family who liked the “butts” of the bread. Still do.

With the heel of the cold meatloaf between them.

The heels make good hot dog buns.
eddi-TBH about 1 year ago
If they packaged the heels separately, people would buy them. They make crunchier toast and don’t soak through like a regular slice.
