I had cats who would walk two hours a day with me in the redwoods. It was the most fun cats and humans could have together. There were no convenient trails so we walked cross-country in the old growth redwoods in which my rental house was located near Mendocino.
While they liked to stop and hunt, they would only do it one at a time and soon rejoin the “group”. They were the only cats I ever had who were willing to walk until I had to take a break. They would pant for a few minutes then be ready to go again. We took turns following each other. The two cats were strongly bonded to each other, as well as to me, so I eventually learned they would not get “lost”.
I do NOT recommend dragging cats into a forest away from home. It was a unique situation that lasted for eight months. I will always remember walking with them across fallen redwoods bridging a river and Johnny Depp and Kirby forty feet up on logs in front of a small waterfall.

A good cat would do that, and so might mine.

Yes, this is traditionally said about dogs, and not cats, but it felt apropos. And not just because one of my cat’s nicknames was ‘puppy’.
