My guess is that the Grim Reaper denotes someone (who is so bad) dying on stage…

A lot of people ‘die’ on stage.

This is a dilemma. If the comic does terrible, he dies. If he does great, he slays. Either way, DEATH (as Pratchett would label him) wins.

If he falls down the stairs, it comedy. If he doesn’t get up, it is tragedy.

You die on the stage, not in the street.
