Yesterday there was much speculation where I work about “was ATT attacked?”.
And I said that it was at least as likely to be a simple screwup, that the subcontract fever that’s gripped both government and business has resulted in the hiring of contracting firms that are only interested in putting bodies in seats, and don’t care if they know anything about the job they’re supposed to do.
This is a major problem that is only getting worse. If I had to bet on the ultimate cause of this technical error (so ATT states now) I’d bet on a contractor who was told to do something, likely objected that it was wrong, and got told to do it anyhow by someone “who knew better” and was hired over them and gave the orders. BTDT.
A friend of mine who is a GE systems engineer, he deals with the software controlling gas turbines at power plants and NG pumping stations. The word through his channels was a worker at a data node was electrocuted, he died, knocking it out and it caused a cascade failure.
I once worked where the only way to contact IT was by email. They refused to answer the phone. They refused to talk to you if you walked in. Email or nothing. However, I could not send email for some reason… So I tried walking in: Nope. I tried phoning: Nope. I DID walk in and demand that someone at least LISTEN to my problem before they shut me down. Nope. I called (no email, right?) my manager. Who called IT. Nope. So he called HIS boss, who called IT. Nope. Oh. Ooops. I guess maybe yes? Bosses don’t like being told no, particularly when that’s a mistake.
The new IT manager who had created the email only system was invited to succeed elsewhere. I got email up and working within a couple of minutes (literally less than three minutes, once they decided to fix the problem). And IT was better to deal with from then until I no longer worked there.

Sometimes AT&T’s support is not as good as Apple’s.

“Invited to succeed elsewhere.” Beautiful! Much nicer than “Terminated with extreme prejudice,” yet with much the same effect.

Obviously, we need to give ATT a tax cut.
Maybe some more deregulation.
