There is an episode on I LOVE LUCY, where Ricky was having problems with English, especially words ending in “ough” (“rough”, “bough”, etc.).

Hope Boog and the bear know about the threatening of the name change for Gasoline Alley to Electric Acres or something like that. These word changes (nor the fate of the strip) aren’t funny, or are they?

My Grandma spoke Polish & English. She used to say English was silly for that same reason…

Why yes of course Engleesh so confoosing. Even after soo many decades me is bearly gets it.

The confusion is understandable when we realize that many of the words that are causing trouble are not all English words. We borrow so many words that they get in each others way.

The principal point that they make is that one must adhere to a certain set of princliples linguistically.

The examples Boog and Bear gave in the strip above not only are spelled alike and have different meanings, they are also pronounced differently.

I just realized — “Boog” and “Bear,” when taken together, sound almost like the word “bugbear”!

I would read it.
