In case it isn’t clear, I didn’t write the dialogue for this one.
Why? Well, occasionally I’ll come across an old comic book panel or cover and go-–wow! I’m not going to top that dialogue. This is one of those times. And I decided to share it.
I don’t know who wrote the dialogue, but the art is by Matt Baker—widely considered the greatest romance comic artist of his time. (And some think the best of all time.)
They were literally not enough men to go around during and after the war. That’s how women got away with being such flirts and men got away with being such jerks.
I was stationed aboard a ballistic missile submarine. They had 2 crews and when one crew was aboard the other had a month of R&R followed by 2 months of training before they swapped. Technically we were stationed in South Carolina but operated out of Rota Spain, so we’d fly out of Charleston to relieve the crew in Spain. The scene at the airport was the opposite of this comic. After the tearful goodbye some of the wives or girl friends would go to the airport bar and pick up guys. I could never bring myself to pickup someone’s cheating wife.

I don’t know why, but I’m reminded of a wartime saying about loose lips. Sinking what? Torpedos? Nah, that can’t be it.

I was in the Navy for 10 years. This isn’t far off from reality. It’s a bit tamer than reality than how the spouses were.
