According to the Defense POW MIA Accounting Agency, the plane his uncle was on was forced to ditch (land or crash into water) due to engine trouble. One of the four aboard survived and was rescued, the other three were never recovered.

There is no accounting of it being shot down, much less cannibals involved.

That is not what he said! I watched that speech. What he said was his uncle was shot down over New Guinea and a recovery team was not sent because cannibals were reported to be in that area.
