I’m not sure how I feel about seeing a relatively recent element of culture mentioned in GA. I wasn’t expecting references to twitter to start showing up until at least the mid 2030s. I figured I’d be in my grave by the time they start calling it X.
Has there ever been a worse rebranding in history than Twitter becoming “X”? This is a name that literally nobody uses in real life, and I speak as someone hopeless addicted to the site (they briefly banned me for no reason I could ever establish, then decided that the harshest punishment they could give me was to let me back on). Basically the only people who ever use the “real” name are publications that feel like they have to and people trying to ingratiate themselves with Elon Musk. I honestly feel like getting Gasoline Alley to use it is a real coup, and I think they could’ve dispensed with the “formerly known as Twitter” bit because it’s not like the strip readership has ever heard of it. They already started panicking when they read the word “internet”!
“X, formerly known as Twitter” is amazing. Absolutely amazing. Doesn’t mention facebook, instagram, tik tok, just “X, formerly known as Twitter.” She is the exact opposite of the desired user base and also has to remind us that X is formerly known as Twitter because it had such incredibly strong brand recognition and “X” is utterly generic and even someone like Gertie knows that. Or does she have a Twitter account? That would be wonderful. Why specify Twitter specifically out of the social media options?
They’re really shilling Walt this week, probably in an effort to salvage his reputation after he first reacted to the re-naming news by taking to his bed like an angry toddler.

Gertie is quite up on current events, which definitely dates the strip, as WWII and Veetnam have also dated it.

I think by now that the whole world is aware that X was formerly known as Twitter. They are beating that phrase to death. Enough is enough!

Is it also on Tik Tok? If so, Xi and his cabinet must be having a good laugh!

Gertie has over 7 million followers on X, formerly known as Twitter. She does a “Getting Things Done With Gertie” kind of podcast.

Do you think we will ever get past the point where they automatically add “formerly known as Twitter”?

Why are people still throwing the formerly known as Twitter around?
